Do you tend to gain weight easily and find it difficult to shift? It's so easy for this to happen with the types of food that are commonly available and our more sedentary life-styles. Ayurveda considers weight gain to be an imbalance of the digestive system. Nutrients are not metabolised properly and this creates a type of sluggish congestion. This can cause a type of panicked ‘u-turn’ by our digestive system and ironically make us feel regularly hungry, even though the previous meal has not been digested. The trick is to strengthen the digestive system and to clear the blockage.
Some of the other typical causes are:
• Poor metabolism
• Low thyroid
• Excessive intake of heavy, fatty and sweet foods
• Lack of exercise
• Sleeping during the day
• Lack of anxiety
• Offspring of obese parents (recent research has found that children of overweight parents are in fact 10 times more likely to be overweight themselves).
Typical symptoms of weight being imbalanced:
• Pendulous buttocks, breasts, abdomen (modern medicine defines this as a Body Mass Index of 30 or more).
• Decreased activity and increased tiredness.
• Shortness of breath
• Profuse sweating
